Slowing Nearsightedness to Protect Your Child’s Vision

Your kid’s vision is an essential component of their development. Good vision helps kids learn and grow, both inside and outside the classroom. It’s crucial for reading in class, scoring goals on the field, or relaxing during a family movie night.

Nearsightedness (myopia) is a common vision error that makes distant objects appear blurry. It often worsens throughout childhood and adolescence and increases the risk of certain eye diseases later in life.

We offer personalized myopia management to help your child see clearly today while protecting their vision for the future.

Let’s work together to support their eye health and set them up for success. Book your child’s eye exam today.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error that affects nearly 30% of Canadians. It occurs when the eye grows too long or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This results in blurry distance vision.

Think of the eye like a camera and the retina as the film. If the image doesn’t focus correctly on the “film,” things appear blurry.

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia is a complex condition and may result from a combination of factors:

  • Increased near work: Prolonged time spent focusing on close-up objects, like books, tablets, or phones, may contribute to myopia progression.
  • Limited outdoor time: Children who spend more time outdoors tend to have a lower risk of myopia. Exposure to natural light and focusing on distant objects may help support healthy eye development.
  • Family history: If a parent or other family members have myopia, your child is more likely to develop it.

Myopia is becoming increasingly common worldwide, with children developing it at younger ages—even as early as 1 year old.

Why Is Myopia Management Important?

Myopia is corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses, but standard prescriptions only sharpen vision—they don’t slow myopia’s progression. Nearsightedness can worsen quickly in childhood, often requiring stronger prescriptions over time.

But it’s not just about the inconvenience—myopia can increase the risk of serious eye conditions, including:

  • Glaucoma: Damage to the optic nerve that leads to vision loss.
  • Cataracts: Clouding of the eye’s lens, causing blurry vision.
  • Retinal detachment: Separation of the retina from the underlying tissue, which can cause vision loss.

There is no safe level of myopia, and once myopia develops, it can’t be reversed. The good news is that we can help slow myopia progression with effective management.

Our Myopia Management Options

We offer multiple myopia management options we personalize to your kid’s needs:

  • Atropine eye drops: These drops temporarily relax the focusing muscles in the eye and are effective at slowing eye growth.
  • Myopia control glasses: These glasses use innovative lenses to redirect light and reduce eye strain, helping slow myopia progression.
  • Multifocal contact lenses: These lenses provide clear vision at all distances and help slow eye growth. We offer a range of options, including daily disposable contacts for convenience and safety.

Research shows the most effective approach combines eye drops and lenses.

How You Can Help at Home

We believe in a team approach to myopia management. Here are some ways you can support your child’s eye health:

  • Encourage outdoor time: Aim for at least 1–2 hours of outdoor play each day.
  • Limit screen time: Set reasonable limits on screen time and encourage 20-second breaks every 20 minutes to reduce eye strain (the 20-20-20 rule).
  • Promote good reading habits: Use proper lighting and encourage your child to hold books and devices at a comfortable distance.
  • Be a role model: Show your child the importance of eye health by practicing good habits yourself! Wear sunglasses outside, take screen breaks, and book regular eye exams for the whole family.
